Pureology is making efforts to reduce the amount of waste in the landfills by acting socially
responsible and developing printed materials with the following standards. In the beginning of
2009, Pureology has phased-in:
- FSC stock for all printed materials
- Post-consumer-recycled paper for all institutional materials
- Application of soy-based inks for printing
- Use of non-petroleum energy printers
SOY-BASED INK
Soy ink is a kind of ink made from soybeans. It is more environmentally friendly than
traditional petroleum-based ink, is available in brighter colors, and makes it easier to recycle
paper. It is a helpful component in paper recycling because the soy ink can be removed more
easily than regular ink from paper during the de-inking process. This allows the recycled paper
to have less damage to its paper fibers and have a brighter appearance. Because of low levels
of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) soy ink takes longer to dry, minimizing toxic emissions
and reducing air pollution.
NON-PETROLEUM ENERGY PRINTING
Non-petroleum energy printing utilizes alternative sources that are renewable and sustainable.
Petroleum is a non-renewable resource, and therefore unsustainable in the long term. Also
using non-petroleum energy reduces the amount of CO2 emissions.
